Asus P5B-VM mouse cursor
When Debian 7.8 with Xfce is installed on this motherboard the mouse pointer does not move. The mouse does as can be noticed when hovering over desktop items.
Tested on Debian 7.8 with Xfce
Solution
The solution that worked for us:
- Disable the internal video card in the BIOS
- Shutdown the PC and power it off
- Insert a PCI video card. We used a very old S3 video card
- Connect the monitor to the PCI video card
- Start the PC
- Select BIOS defaults when asked to choose for F1 or F2
- Continue booting
To be investigated
Check if it works with an AGP video card

Some ideas which might lead to a solution
Might be the case
- The fault might be with the kernel, a kernel bug
Did not work for us
- On a Gnome desktop only? In a terminal do as root: gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false
- Swap hardware: Try a PS/2 mouse in stead of a USB mouse and a USB mouse in stead of a PS/2 mouse
- Workaround: Resume from suspend, mouse pointer might be visible
- Look in the logfiles for clues:
- dmesg
- syslog
- Check the mouse cursor themes. Maybe an other theme solves it
- xserver-xorg-video-intel
- Do nor utilize xorg.conf
- Installing ( on squeeze ):
- xserver-xorg-video-intel
- libdrm-intel1
- xorg (from wheezy testing)
- Reinstall the videocard driver
Not tested
- Workaround: On Gnome do System | Preferences | Mouse | first tab | mark the “Locate Pointer: Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed” option to on
- Reinstall / upgrade the following packages:
- linux-base
- linux-image-[imageversion]
- linux-libc-dev
- In single-user mode: sudo telinit 1
- Clear the CMOS ( after bios upgrade )
- Updating to Linux Kernel version 3.x.x
- Problematic power management behaviors with respect to USB devices
- Liquorix
