When using
e2label
and you get an error
Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open
this can be caused by the filesystem being not ex2, ex3, ext4 So if you want use e2label on a vfat formatted USBdrive it will not work

How to edit label of USB drive?
The man page is not up to date. This uses an undocumented option and syntax. This works although even if lower case is used the label will be in all caps
