• Login as root to a terminal window
• Make sure gcc and make are installed
• Make sure libpcap-dev is installed
• Download the source from the iftop website
• Copy the soucecodefile to /tmp
• cd /tmp
• Extract the file tar xf tar xf iftop-1.0pre4.tar.gz
• Run ./configure && make
• Then we ran into

  checking for a curses library containing mvchgat... none found
  configure: error: Curses! Foiled again!
  (Can't find a curses library supporting mvchgat.)
  Consider installing ncurses.

ncurses is installed (ncurses-base, ncurses-bin, ncurses-term and libncurses5, libncurses6, libncursesw5, libncursesw6) and works. iftop installed from the repository and other ncurses based programs work fine
Installing libncurses6-dbg did not solve it
We could not find a solution so far
