Alpha-channel: A layer of transparency below the composite image. It can be removed or added via Layer > Tranperancy > Add Alpha Channel
Eraser tool: Erase pixels to a background color or to transparency
Right click on the tab tool icon and select Tool options to show all the options the tool has

Transparency

Opacity is a relative measure for transparency. 0% opacity = 100% transparency. 100% opacity = no transparency

Semi-Transparency

Semi-Transparency is the case when the “Opacity” slider position is between 0% and < 100%. This can be used to fade an image

Add transperancy to a .png file

  • Layer > Transparency >
    • > Add Alpha cannel
    • > Color to Alpha…
  • Click on the bar right of “Color”
    • Select black (#000000), RGB: 0.0.0, HTML notation: 000000, as the color to make transparent.
    • Transparency threshold: 0,000
    • Opacity threshold: 1,000
    • Click “OK”
  • Save the resulting image in PNG format via: File > Export As… > Select Filetype (By Extension)
  • Select “PNG image png”
  • Click on “Export”
  • A window pops up
    • Set: Save background color: On
    • Set: Save creationtime: On
    • Set: Save colorvalues from transparent pixels: On
    • Set: Others: Off
    • Select: Automatic pixelformat
    • Compression level: 9
    • Click on Advanced settings. 4 more options present themselves
      • All four off, or what you need
    • Click on “Export”

Remove an item from the windows list

  • Drag it out of the windows list so it becomes a window on its own
  • Close this window

Crop

Insert an image

Move an image

  • Paste the image in the picture
  • CTRL-x
  • CTRL-v
  • Select the move tool: Tools > Transform Tools > Move M
    • The move tool can move layers, selections, and paths
  • Move the image

Move an area

  • Select an area with one of the area select tools
  • Hold down CTRL-ALT
  • Start dragging, release the CTRL key, the selected area
    • After dropping the selection you can move it with the arrow keys

Selections

Undo a selection: Select > None (CTRL + SHIFT + A)

There are two types of results for a selection

  • Anchored selection
  • Layered selection

Anchored selection

When finished the selection can not be unanchored other than by an undo action (Ctrl+Z). So it has become part of the current layer

Method 1

  • Select the right layer
  • In Tools | Selection Tools select the “Rectangle Select R” option
  • Make the selection by left clicking, dragging and releasing the mouse(button)
  • In Layer select the “Anchor Layer Ctrl+H” option
  • The selection is now part of the current layer

Method 2

  • Select the right layer
  • In Tools | Selection Tools select the “Rectangle Select R” option
  • Make the selection by left clicking, dragging and releasing the mouse(button)
  • ENTER
  • Ctrl-X
  • Ctrl-V. A floating layer is created
  • In Tools | Transform Tools select the “Move M” option
  • Move the selection by left clicking and dragging
  • In Layer select the “Anchor Layer Ctrl+H” option
  • The floating layer is removed

Add fonts

  • Test the new font(s)

Change the color of existing text

It is always a good idea to enter text with the text tool and give text its own layer. If so, the color can be changed

  • Click the layer in the Layers dialog
  • Select the text tool in the Toolbox
  • Click in the text. The text box should appear. It surrounds the text
  • CTRL-A (select all text inside the text box)
    • The text options box appears
    • Click in the bottom right corner on the color square
    • The color selection window opens
    • Select the color you want
    • Click on OK
    • The text should have changed to the selected color
      • If not select an other color
      • Click on OK
      • Select the color you want
      • Click on OK
      • Now the color of the text should be the color you want

Bucket fill

Ctrl+click will use the background color

When you have moved a floating selection, in the layer do

  • Right mouse click
  • Select “Anchor layer”

or do Ctrl+H

Bucket fill

Select a region first, then fill it

Ctrl+click will use the background color The paint bucket shows a black circle with line through it indicating that you can not do that. Solution:

  • Menu | Layer
  • Click: New from visible
  • Now you should be able to paint bucket fill (we were not. To be solved)

This can happen after you used the text tool, which creates a new layer so you are in the text layer and not in the picture layer. Solution:

  • Select Bucket fill
  • Select the Layers tab
    • Select the layer you want to fill something in
  • Now you should be able to fill again
  • Try selecting an area with the Fuzzy Select tool and then fill the area

Blur

When the Alpha layer is removed the block goes away

Color picker

Select the layer the part of the picture you want to color pick on is in

Draw

Tool options can be activated by double clicking on a tool icon

Make sure the line, when using the Pencil Tool has a with of at least 2 pixels otherwise it will not show up

Free hand

  1. Select pencil tool
  2. Select the color
  3. With the mouse point at the start point
  4. Press and hold the left mouse button
  5. Make your drawing
  6. Release the mouse button

A line

  1. Select pencil tool
  2. Select the color
  3. With the mouse point at the start point
  4. Press the left mouse button
  5. Release the mouse button
  6. Press and hold the SHIFT key
  7. Move the mouse pointer to the end point of the line
  8. Click with the left mouse button
  9. Repeat 7. and 8. until done
  10. Release the SHIFT button

A circle

E or: Tools > Selection Tools > Ellipse Select
Edit > Stroke Selection > Set line width > Stroke button

Refuses to draw in a new layer

In Make sure

  • Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers
    • Opacity: 100%
    • Lock: Unlock all three items
    • Select the right layer *
  • Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options
    • Mode: Normal
    • Opacity: is set to 100%. Right click here and then select “Edit Layer Attributes…”
    • Brush: Anything but: Clipboard Image and Clipboard Mask. Maybe you need to try several
    • Size: 50%
    • Hardness 100%
  • Select > None

Then read: Gimp will not draw 1)

Transparency

  • If the image lacks a transparency channel like jpg files do add an alpha transparency channel: Layer > Tranperancy > Add Alpha Channel
    • If the Alpha Channel is present this option is greyed out and the “Remove Alpha Channel” option is in white text
  • If needed bucket fill the area that has to become transparent. Select in the “Bucket Fill” options
    • BG color fill
    • Sample merged
  • Menu bar: Select > By Color (CTRL+O does not show the tools options so do not use this shortcut). Select in the “Select by Color” options:
    • Fill transparent areas
    • Sample merged
  • Click on the color you want to remove and get transparent in stead
  • Do delete with the DELETE key

Erase

Paint foreground

The most simple way to erase is to paint with the background color of the image

  • Open the image
  • Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Color
    • Or click on the foreground (white rectangle):
    • Set the foreground color to the same as the background color of the image
  • Tools > Paint Tools > Paintbrush (p)
  • Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options
    • Brush: “Block 01” or “Hardness 100” work best
    • Size: As you need
    • Opacity: 100%
    • Hardness: 100%
  • Paint the parts to be erased

Eraser tool

The eraser can erase to background color or transparency

To background color

In the same layer
  • Tools > Paint tools > Eraser

If it works, happy erasing. If not:

  • Open an image
  • Layer > Tranperancy > Remove Alpha Channel
  • Select the background color you want to erase to
  • Tools > Paint tools > Eraser
  • Start Erasing
In a new layer

In a .png image

  • Add an Alpha channel to the image
  • Layer > Tranperancy > Add Alpha Channel
  • Layer > New layer
    • Mode Erase
    • Opacity: 100%
  • Activate the transparency layer in: Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers
  • Select > None
  • Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options
    • Brush: Anything but: Clipboard Image and Clipboard Mask. Maybe you need to try several
    • Opacity: 100%
    • Hardness: 100%
    • Anti Erase (Alt): Off
  • Work in progress

To transparency

  • Open the image
  • Layer > Tranperancy > Add Alpha Channel
  • Tools > Paint tools > Eraser
    • Brush: Anything but: Clipboard Image and Clipboard Mask. Maybe you need to try several
    • Opacity: 100%
    • Hardness: 100%
    • Anti Erase (Alt): Off
