Mixing memory

  • Not all memory can be mixed even if it has the same speed
    • Be aware that it is possible that the memory controller can only make one setting which will be valid for al slots
    • Make sure the ranking is the same
    • Make sure the brand of the used chips all the DIMM's is the same
    • Make sure the production date is the same
    • Conclusion: Buy the DIMM's as a set otherwise chances are great your computer will not start up, not even in BIOS or UEFI
  • Single and double rank
    • Single rank DIMM: 1Rx4 or 1Rx8 on the DIMM module label
    • Double rank DIMM: 2Rx4 or 2Rx8 on the DIMM module label
  • JDEC / SPD and XMP profiles
  • Single channel (any number of DIMM installed) and dual channel (even number off DIMM's installed)
  • 1,2V and 1,35V. Warning: Watch out when using 1,2V memory at 1,35V. You might damage the memory

Tools

Tools to read the SPD memory on the DIMM's
i2c-tools contains

  • i2cdetect
  • i2cbusses ?
  • i2cdump
  • i2cget
  • i2cset
  • i2ctransfer
  • i2c-stub-from-dump

ASrock motherboards

On newer ASrock motherboards you can see the memory settings in the UEFI tab “OC Tweaker” under “DRAM Information”
