eTrex 30
Some handy information:
- Introduction: May 2011
- Garmin page
- Specification on the Garmin website
- eTrex seriescomparison
- Most eTrex devices can handle a 32GB microSD card. Use a HC cat 10 card
- Screen: 220×176 pixels
- The maximum
- size allowed of the uSD card is 32 GB
- number of saved tracks is 200
- track length is 10.000 points
- number of navigation routes is 200
- number of maptiles is 2.000. When more, maps might not show up in Setup > Maps > Map Information
- Change proximity unit:
- Goto the Main Menu page
- Add proximity if not added yet
- Goto the proximity page
- Open the proximity page
- Open the contex menu
- Select 'Change units'
- Select the desired unit
- Click on the joystick to activate
- The eTrex Vista HCx is the predecessor of the eTrex 30
Issues
- Does not always update the position of the marker on the map. The track is updated. The distance not being update can be over a kilometer. This also happens in open terrain
- System freezes. The batteries need to be removed to solve the issue
- Internal memory not recognized for waypoints when an SDcard is installed
- The back button is the first to get worn out. It is fully broken so the internal switch is exposed and the device is not water tight anymore
- The device can be very slow
- Selecting a track until the device is ready so the user can select the 'Delete' option can take up to 20 seconds
- Tracks which do not show in Basecamp do show up on the device
- Recent finds in “Where to” does not show the last find
- Depending on de manufacture date the updating of the map can be very, unworkable, slow when moving faster than walking speed, like when used in a car
Missing features
- Seperate settings while navigation and while not navigating
- Calculating pane only shown while calculating setting

eTrex 22x / 32x

eTrex SE
- Introduction: March 2023
- Limited stand alone functionality. For full functionality a smartphone with bluetooth and the Garmin explore app is needed
- The app needs connectivity to the Garmin website which is a privacy issue. From the Garmin website: “The Garmin Explore™ app for Android and iOS works in conjunction with the Garmin Explore website to expand the capabilities of your eTrex® SE or eTrex Solar outdoor handheld.”
- That means the eTrex SE needs to connect to your smartphone (by bluetooth) which needs to connect to the Garmin website via the Internet (in the field that is 4G) in order to make full use of the eTrex SE which is a privacy concern

Coördinates
- OpenStreetMap coördinates examples. The double quotes might need to be retyped:
- 52°30'47“N 4°15'33”E
- 52° 30' 47“N, 4° 15' 33”E
- N52°30'47“ E4°15'33”
- 52.51305, 4.25916 (results in 52.51305, 4.25916 and 4.25916, 52.51305 since no N, E, W or S is entered)
- 52.51305N, 4.25916E
- N52.51305, E4.25916
- Then hover over the Results line, with the coördinates in decimal notation, to show the pointer on the map

Some variants:
| Name | Remark |
|---|---|
| Liesure is FreiZeitKarte | Low contrast, does not show roads in Basecamp |
| Onroad | Does not show street names on the map. Street names can be used in the “Where to” menu. Does not take the optimal route. With a large map, like 1,3GB, it can take a long time for the device to react |
| Opentopo | Buildings are dark. Not convenient for car navigation |
| OSM | Good for car navigation |

- Tollways to: “Do not avoid” (Tollways on then OFM routes only by nodes (knooppunten) and other bicycle routes)
- Highways to: “Do not avoid” (Bicycle ways are highways on the OFM)
- Unpaved roads to: “Avoid or “Do not avoid”
- Carpool Lanes to: “Do not avoid”
