Map sources
Language
To see all names of places, countries and so on in English select: Tiles > Bikemap
Stetting up the maps
To get started
- Start Microsoft Windows
- Login as Administrator
- Install JaVaWa Device Manager or check for updates and update if applicable
- Install JaVaWa GMTK or check for updates and update if applicable
- Download the .img and .exe version of the map from Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap
- Make sure Basecamp is closed
Install the maps to the GPS
- Extract the zip file containing the .img file and copy it to your GPS uSD card in the directory Garmin. It can be faster to put the uSD card in an USB 2.0 card reader since some Garmin devices only have USB 1.1. With USB 1.1 2GB takes over an hour to copy. When the copying is finished place the card back in the GPS
- If your GPS is not connected to the PC connect it now (with is uSD card placed in the GPS) or follow the procedure, where applicable, with the uSD card still in the cardreader
- Wait until the USB symbol shows in the screen of the GPS
- Wait until Windows signals that the two drives of the GPS are found and ready for use
- Start JaVaWa Device Manager
- Rename the map with Device Manager. All 4 items
- Turn off visibility in Basecamp. You are going to install the .exe with the map wich is faster
- Close JaVaWa Device Manager
- Start Basecamp and Eject the GPS by left clicking on Internal Storage in the Device maps structure and then clicking on Eject
- Check if the map works on the GPS
- Turn of the global map on the GPS
- Zoom in to maximum detail on a spot that does not overlap with other maps. Still make sure that you are not looking at the global map
Install maps on Windows Basecamp
- Do one map at the time. If you want to configure more maps follow this procedure after the procedure of previous is finished
- Make up a unique name for the map being configured
- Run the .exe version of the map. Place the files in an appropriate directory
- Wait until the .exe is installation is finished. Not doing anything on the computer to avoid messing things up
- Start JaVaWa GMTK
- Select the just installed map
- Goto Extra and change the mapname and ID. The ID must be unique. Choose YMMDD where Y is the last digit of the Year. MM and DD are for month and day. So you are good for something like the next ten years. This avoids having to come up with an unique ID. The ID length has a maximum of 5 digits.
- Close JaVaWa GMTK
- Start regedit.exe as administrator. Close it and open it again if it was already open
- Search for “routable”. You will need to find something like OSM generic routable (new style)
- Rename / change the
- Keyname
- DisplayName
- UninstallString. Change the uninstall link with the name of the installed map if it is not already there. Example: C:\Garmin\Maps\BostonMap\Uninstall.exe
- Close regedit
- Look in the folder of the map. By default you can find it under c:\Garmin\Maps. Change the text in the regkey.ori file to the name of the directory the map is in. Example: Replace “OSM generic routable (new style)” with “BostonMap”
- Now you can repeat the procedure for an other map
- Log off as Administrator
- Log in to your user account
- Start Basecamp
- Select the new map from the Map menu
- You are ready to go
Overlapping maps
When maps overlap navigation on your device will probably not work. Also enabled maps can be missing parts or parts of maps are shown next to each other. This can be avoided by turning off maps. Turning of maps in the device does not solve it. What solves it is changing the file name. For example change
map2.img
in
map2.img.off
Partially visible maps
When maps are partially visible it might be necessary to turn on the global map.
Global map disadvantage
A disadvantiage of turning on the global map is that it is hard to see if all tiles of the installed map are indeed viewable or if the map which is installed is indeed the desired map
