Audio issues

Bell volume

Turn off: xset b off
Turn on: xset b on

Set volume, pitch and duration: xset b [volume [pitch [duration]]]. Example: xset b 50 440 100

No sound

After upgrading to Debian Wheezy with xfce the sound can be muted.
This can also happen when you mute with the slider of the speaker icon in the tray.

This might be solved by opening a terminal, start alsamixer and unmute the sound in alsamixer.

If the sound is still muted check the Audio Mixer settings. By right clicking on the loudspeaker icon in the tray and selecting

Run Audio Mixer

the mixer can be started.
The mixer can also be started via:

Start > Multimedia > Pulseaudio Volume Control

and looks like

After selecting the controls via the Select Controls… button on the lower left you can select the audio channels and check if there are muted channels which cause the mute.

Default sound card

Distorsion

  • Check if Boost is on. If so, turn it off

Solving issues

Recording / Input Devices

  • Make sure the “Profile:” in the configuration tab is set to “… Duplex”
  • Record with Audacity and check for distorsions = the signal is too high. Adjust it in Volume Control, on the mixer or anywhere from the source to Audacity

A setup example

What we have according to lshw and Volume Control
There is one audio device on the motherboard and one on a PCIe card

On the motherboard

  1. We will call this “Family 17h” further down on this page
    • product: Caicos HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6450 / 7450/8450/8490 OEM / R5 230/235/235X OEM]
    • vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
    • It has two connections
      • The HDMI connection. It shows up, in Volume Control, as: “Caicos HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6450 / 7450/8450/8490 OEM / R5 230/235/235X OEM]”. We set this to off in Volume Control tab Configuration
      • The analog connection. It shows up, in Volume Control, as: “Family 17h (Models 00f-0fh) HD Audio Controller Analog Stereo”
        • It has the capability to detect if a connector is plugged in
        • In Volume Control you may need to select, on the Port: an other input or output and then the first one in order to update the plugged in state to the actual state
  2. We will call this “” further down on this page since it is not mentioned nor used by us as far as we know. What this device is we do not know at this point
    • product: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD]
    • vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD]

Analog Stereo On the PCIe card

  1. We will call this “CMI8738” further down on this page
    • product: CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio
    • vendor: C-Media Electronics Inc
    • This shows up, in Volume Control, as: “CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio (CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device)”
    • This device does not have the capability to detect if a connector is plugged in

Plugging in the headphones in the Family 17h headphone connector has no effect as expected

Conclusions

It is better not to use the tray icon when you have more than one output stream active or paused. This can be confusing and annoying. Use Volume Control in stead

Test #1 and #2:

  • Plugging in the headphones switches off the line out
  • Plugging in the headphones introduces a moderate hum
    • Disconnecting the Line In from Family 17h does not eliminate the hum
    • Disconnecting the Line In from Family 17h and the headphones does not eliminate the hum
    • Reconnecting the Line In to Family 17h eliminates the hum and reintroduces the noise

The Family 17h audio device is better then the CMI8738 device concerning noise and hum

Left and Right

We experienced the switching from left to right an back on the computer. So far we could not find the cause
