Clonezilla

Clonezilla is a Debian based partition and disk imaging distribution
We used Clonezilla version 2.4.6-25 for the following manual

DRBL (Diskless Remote Boot in Linux)

Preparations

Checking the disk

Before you start it is a good idea to check the disk and filesystem for faults

  • Spinrite is an exelent tool to check the disk
  • The file system can be checked with programs like fsck

Clean the disk

  • Remove all unneeded files
  • Boot from a live cd
    • Make sure all partitions are unmounted
    • Run zerofree -v /dev/sdx on all partitions

Boot Clonezilla

To download an ISO and put it on a CD

  • 1. Select CPU architecture: amd64 or 1686 (i686 will work on most systems. If you have a 64bit system select amd64]]
  • 2. Select file type: iso
  • 3. Select repository: auto
  • Click the Download button
  • Save the file to the harddisk
  • Burn the ISO to a CD
  • Boot the computer from the CD
  • Make sure the partitions are not mounted

Making an image

Now it has to be decide if an image of a partition is made or an image of the whole harddisk. If an image of the whole harddisk is made each partition image is stored in its own imagefile. If you want to make a whole disk image make a change in the procedure below and highlight savedisk Save_local_disk_as_an_image when the option apears

Make a partition image

  • When the orange and white menu screen has appeared select:
    • Standard: Clonezilla live (Default settings, VGA 800×600)
    • Advanced: If you know what you are doing:
      • Other modes of Clonezilla live
      • Clonezilla live (To RAM. Boot media can be removed later). The PC needs to have at least 100 MB of RAM as we can tell
  • We choose Advanced
  • Choose Language: en_US.UTF-8 English or as desired
  • Configuring console-data Don't touch keymap
