echo 5 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

The range of the value may vary. Sometimes 0-6, sometimes 0-15, others(?)

Blank the screen

xset dpms force off

as alias added to .bashrc

alias blank='xset dpms force off'
