Fedora

Fedora 32 with the Gnome 3 desktop

First impressions

  • When opening “Activities” the first time one has to scroll to see all items. On opening the second time there are less items, only one page not fully filed
  • When you go to Activities | Show applications there are two knobs on the bottom. One of them is “All” but it is not all. For instance there is no terminal. When we use the searchbar on the top and enter “Termial” we find a terminal. So “All” is not covering all
  • Terminal: A terminal does not seem to be installed because it is not to be found in the “Show applications” view. However, with the search bar a terminal can be found.
  • Clipboard: We could not get clipit to work. We installed clipman. It was also nowhere to be found. Normally these programs can be found in the system tray. When going to “Activities” and tne search for clipman we find it. Clicking on it seems to start it but it is nowhere to be found. It is not intuitive. We installed Clip man and GPaste. Same issues. They are not usable because it is not intuitive, it does not work out of the box. Items we copied wiht CTRL-c do not land in the GPaste. We gave up on having a clipboard in Fedora
  • x2GO is not in the repository

And some more from the boot before the crash of the live instance

To be redacted

  • No clipboard installed by default so we lost the initial version of this text.
  • It is not possible to switch between windows of the same application with ALT-tab
  • No panel with meters so you can monitor the state of your computer.
  • The installer has only icons and program names which makes it hard to select the right program. You have to click on a program's icon to see a description. Icons are not arranged alfabetically. From the live version programs do not install. We got a memory issue of some kind (the text could not be scraped so we can not post it here without typing the text here manualy) althoug there is 16 GB of RAM in the system.
  • It takes two clicks to get to the overview of installed programs. df -h does not show any issues with RAM availability.
  • Windows can not be minimized, there is no windows buttons applet in the system bar, so you will need to use ALT-TAB to switch between windows.
  • No xfce version
  • There are two geany verstions which can be installed. A “normal” version and a sandboxed version. If you install the latter you get a cryptic error message which does not make this clear so you are left with the impression that geany is uninstallable. When you search for geany in the installer you find the two versions. At that point it is not clear which one to install. Both have the same description but they are not the same. You need to read the comments which one you need.
  • On we read “We're so glad you've decided to give Fedora Workstation a try. We know you'll love it.” Not so much. Fedora, which uses default Gnome 3, is not our operating system of choice at this point. xfce can not be installed from the installer
  • It is unclear how to operate clipit. It is not intuitive

Crash

Fedora crashed and rebooted when we copy end pasted some text from one input field to an other. This occured on a system with an ASrock AB350 Pro4 motherboard with an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor
