GRUB and Windows
Installing Windows after Debian
When Windows is installed after Debain is installled the MBR needs to be set back to boot to GRUB
- Boot with the Super GRUB2 disk
- If you have the Super GRUB2 disk version 1.99 beta 1
- Run “Detect any GRUB2 config file (grub.cfg)”
- Boot the found config file
- Select the already installed Debian installation
- If you have the Super GRUB2 disk version 2.02s4
- Highlight Detect and show boot methods and press ENTER
- Boot into Debian Linux /boot/vmlinuz-x.x.x-x-amd64 (hd0,msdos1, or something like that, by highlighting it and pressing ENTER
- Login into Debian
- Open a terminal and login as root
- Remove the CD
- Run grub-install /dev/sda ( Replace sda with the drive Debian is on ). Warning: do not use sdax. Only specify a drive, not a partition
- Run update-grub
- Reboot
- Now the GRUB menu should appear with the choice for Linux or Windows
Errors
GRUB and Flexnet error
We installed Windows 10
After we ran grub-istall we got the error
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 32 is already in use by FlexNet: avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track. Installation finished. No error reported.
The machine was bought second hand with a restored clean Windows 7 installation. It had had Flexnet before
To be solved: How to remove this Flexnet data from FlexNet
The reaction from Flexnet in a forum:
You should try to find out what software you installed that installed FNC. Contact their support.

Some ideas
- Remove FlexNet if it is installed. It can give problems when updating GRUB. Some ideas

Solving issues
Windows XP does not boot from GRUB
Some Ideas to solve this
- Run update-grub
- Run grub-install
- Run chackdisk from the Windows RepairCD. You can also use Mini XP. Hiren's Boot CD has it
- Boot Windows XP from Hiren's Boot CD (third menu page)
- Use the Boot-Repair Disk
- Compare the files in the windows XP root directory the the files from an other PC
- Check the UUID of the partition with the one shown by blkid. Boot from Liux to run blkid
Windows 10 does not boot from GRUB
When Windows 10 does not boot from GRUB there is a workaround:
- Install Windows 10 in a primary partition
- Install Windows 7 in a primary partition
- Update GRUB
- Now Windows 10 can be started via the bootmanager of Windows 7 which is started from GRUB. Debian can be started directly from GRUB
If you get a "CONTOL-D" prompt
This means there is something seriously wrong. Some ideas
- Check run blkid and check it against /etc/fstab
- Turn off drives not needed to boot into Debian
- journalctl -xb
