We investigated the DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato firmwares

These firmwares of DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato are probably not up to date and thereby possibly not save to use. They can be vunurable to the bash shell Shock and other bugs. Correct us if we are wrong
Shellshock can be tested by running

env x='() { :;}; echo Vulnerable' bash -c "echo This is a test"

When only “This is a test” is displayed the test is OK

After installing version 1.28 on a WRT54G v2.2 the Internet connection was blocked sometimes. Be sides from that the router works fine. The user interface is very nice and fast. There has been no update since 27 june 2010, nor any mention that the firmware is still up to date. So maybe there are security holes

The latest version to run on it is 10.03.1 Newer versions need more RAM
Since security updates are not available, as far as we know, OpenWRT is not suitable for these routers any more ;-(
This means that a newer router is needed every so often in order to be able to use OpenWRT in a safe way
When you do install make sure you execute, in telnet, these commands

nvram set boot_wait=on
nvram set boot_time=10
nvram set wait_time=10
nvram commit && reboot

If you need to reinstall the firmware and the webinterface is not accessable you can use tftp. On Linux install atftp. Set the timeout to 5. See Bootloader contains tftp server for the procedure

dd-wrt.v24_mini_wrt54g.bin

without the 30-30-30 reset procedure. It works.
