Network hardware

Broadcom BCM4318 WiFi

See also broadcom_br3418_wifi

Once you have managed to get a BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller to work next time you boot the computer it is possible that it will not automatically connect. You can connect again using the following procedrue:

Install rfkill
If you do not have a network manager with which you can turn WiFi off and on install Wicd
login as root
rfkill event

Now you get something like

1428653610.737023: idx 0 type 1 op 0 soft 0 hard 1

To get the WiFi to work both soft and hard need to be zero. When you have a hardware WiFi button you can use it. The soft can be stet to zero with the Networkmanager of WiCD by turning WIFi off and on.

RT5372 external WiFi adapter

Installing the Deal extreme (sku: 215412) Ralink RT5372 USB WiFi adapter on Debian Wheezy.
The cd is not of much help. There are 3 firmware versions on the CD, which have to be compiled, so you have to investigate which one to use.
We tried the most appropriate and ran into make install errors. A better way is to install the

firmware-ralink

package which worked for us. A pity it is not mentioned in the documentation.

After installation the output of lshw shows:

configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rt2800usb driverversion=3.2.0-4-amd64 firmware=0.29
               link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn
