Software & Updates

This can be found in: Start | Settings | Software & Updates
Tab “Debian Software”

  • Turn all three options under “Downloadable from the Internet” on
    • DFSG: Debian Free Software Guidelines
  • Set “Download form” to a server near by

Issues

Authentication is required to refresh the system repositories

This popup did not go away after entering the users nor the root password. There is no cancel button

Research

The official PackageKit website
Command line tools:

  • pkmon: allows you to monitor what PackageKit is doing (mainly used for debugging)
  • pkgenpack: generate Service Packs with a package and its dependencies

Do:

  • cd /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/
  • less org.freedesktop.packagekit.policy
  • Search for “org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-sources-refresh”
  • Scroll down until you find
<defaults>
  <allow_any>auth_admin</allow_any>
  <allow_inactive>auth_admin</allow_inactive>
  <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
</defaults>
  • This should work so a normal user can update the repositories but for us it did not

Possible solution, workaround:

  • Change the settings for the “Package Update Indicator”
    • It's icon icon can be found in the system tray
    • Right click on this icon
    • Select “Preferences”
    • Set “Refresh cache” to “Never”
    • Now you have to check yourself for updates on a regular basis
  • Uninstall packagekit
  • Install cron-apt

Solution

  • None so far

What did not solve the issue:

  • Goto: Start | Settings | Software & Updates
    • Click on the “Updates” tab
    • Select “Never” in the “Automatically check for updates:” roll down menu
  • Uninstall unattended-upgrades

Packagekitd high CPU load

On slower computers packagekitd can have a high CPU load, above 100% in top, for an extended period of time. So we uninstallded: pk-update-icon and its dependencies:

  • libappindicator3-1
  • libappstream4
  • libglib2.0-bin
  • libpackagekit-glib2-18
  • libstemmer0d
  • libyaml-0-2
  • package-update-indicator
  • packagekit
  • packagekit-tools

Now we want to write a script which does the same job. T.b.d
