Windos 10 mobile upgrade information from Microsoft
On the Windows 10 Mobile Support Life Cycle page we read that Windows 10 Mobile, released in November 2015, will be supported until 9 January 2018

Form Microsoft: Windows 10 Mobile is being made available to supported smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1. Phones and devices that can upgrade to Windows 10:

(Our) conclusion: In general devices with 512MB RAM and / or with Windows Phone 8 are not upgradable to Windows 10 Mobile

The Lumina 520 is very popular. It has Windows Phone 8 and 521MB RAM

Here an article about updating the Lumina 520. We did not test it. It seems the case that an upgrade to windows Phone 8.1 tor the Lumina 520 is possible. In that case the device might be able to recieve updates* until 11 july 2017 (For Windows Phone 8 at least to 14 December 2015). * In Dutch, we cloud not make Microsoft present a page in English
At Diy factory an upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 is preformed. This is possible if you register as a developer. Otherwise we read in the comments that the Nokia care center says 8.1 is not available for the Lumina 520

If you want to keep your phone updated we see two options:

• Upgrade now to Windows Phone 8.1 and buy a new Window 10 Mobile phone next year ( maybe newer models / cheaper )
• Buy a new Windows 10 Mobile phone now

If you buy a new Windows Mobile 10 phone somehow you need to transfer your contacts, calendar and other data the new phone. A way might be via backup to Microsoft Onedrive

If you do not mind about updates

• Keep using your Lumina 520 with Windows Phone 8
